Frame Identification

Most lugged MKMs were built with either Prugnat or Bocama lugs - see Richard Sachs website - for lug details - All Ultimates were lugless but are, of course, easily identifiable

Frame Dating

Assuming that production was spread evenly over the nine years of production with only four months production in 1972 and six months production in 1980 the average frames per month are 75 per month, this would give the following ranges per year :

1972     001 to 300
1973    300 to 1200
1974    1200 to 2100
1975    2100 to 3000
1976    3000 to 3900
1977    3900 to 4800
1978    4800 to 5700
1979    5700 to 6600   (5705 known to be early 1979, 6184 late 1979)
1980    6600 to 6805??

Identifying Frame Numbers

The easiest way to find your frame number is to turn your frame upside down and take a look on the underside of the bottom bracket.

The frame number should be clearly stamped into the bottom, usually following a 4-digit format without letters, unless early like the frame at the top of the page which is 3.

A matching set of numbers should also be stamped on the forks so please check those to ensure both match.

To add a frame to the MKM register (and hopefully the gallery too) we require the following details:

  • Frame number

  • Your approximate location (county, region, state or even country is plenty)

  • If you are the original owner or not, and a few details as to how you came to own your MKM

The following images make identifying and adding the frames that much easier:

  1. Underside of frame bottom bracket (frame number)

  2. Full bike / frame right hand side or left hand side

  3. Close up of head tube

  4. Close up of seat tube, including seat stays (essential)

  5. Any features such as engravings

Finally, any extra's such as the drop outs or forks etc are always welcome and make identification that much easier!
